The brain never fails to fascinate me with its many complexities. I often ponder on how my husband can clearly remember so much of his early childhood while my own childhood is nothing more than vague puzzle pieces I often struggle to fit together. Instead of looking forward to family gatherings and recalling past holidays or other long ago events, I dread them. There is nothing more frustrating than having to admit to not remembering your past.

In Kiss, Shauna McAllister is faced with her inability to recall past events.

Six weeks after a car accident, Shauna awakes in hospital having suffered a coma. Not only does the night of the accident remain a mystery, but also the months leading up to the incident. Alligations arise which not only effect Shauna, but also her prestigious father, Landon McAllister, head of McAllister MediVista, a pharmaceutical research company, and senator bidding on the White House.

Estranged from Landon since the death of her mother and his subsequent remarriage, Shauna is vaguely aware that something monumental looms over any hope of reconciliation between them. To make matters worse, her brother Rudy, her only ally and apple of their father’s eye, lays victim to the accident she is blamed for.

Sequestered from the public eye on her father’s estate, Shauna turns to Wayne Spade, her attentive but forgotten boyfriend, to help her piece together the events leading up to the accident. On her quest for answers, Shauna discovers a puzzling mental ability which raises even more questions. Her circle of trust soon narrows as it becomes apparent that some around her are determined to keep her from recovering the memories she desperately pursues in her search for truth.

Kiss is more than just great entertainment. I couldn’t help but relate to Shauna as she struggled to recall her past. As I read, I spent a lot of time pondering the scenario and the intricacies of the human mind. Don’t get me wrong, the book is far from heavy when it comes to the ins and outs of the plot device and is Dekker all the way—pure escapism with inescapable truth. The story is compelling, beautifully paced, and well told.

Dekker recently revealed on his message board that he planned to write three books a year in the foreseeable future, one of which would be co-written with his editor for the last ten years, Erin Healy. Kiss is the first offering from the two and Healy’s debut novel.

I’ve been a fan of Dekker books ever since I first discovered them in 2003, but I will admit to preferring the writing style contained in Kiss far more than I have previous Dekker books. I’m sure the smoother style is a tribute to Healy’s editing expertise and skilful blending.

Only one minor element marred my enjoyment of the story. On a whole, the characterisations are wonderful, and I was completely drawn to Shauna’s. However, the motivation behind one character did remain a little unclear at the end and continued to play on my mind well after closing the book. A subplot also seemed incomplete and has me wondering if Dekker and Healy plan a sequel or tie-in book.

Whatever the case may be, Kiss is a worthy read. Dekker fans won’t be disappointed with this collaboration, and I am sure Healy will soon have a fan base of her own. I am already looking forward to seeing what these two talented writers come up with next, either together or separately.

Ted is the son of missionaries John and Helen Dekker, whose incredible story of life among headhunters in Indonesia has been told in several books. Spotlighting: The Summer The Wind Whispered My Name by Don Locke

Remember the days of Studebakers, Wiffle ball, Nikita Khrushchev, and Good Humor trucks? More than likely you will be recalling the 60s.

Opening the pages of The Summer The Wind Whispered My Name is comparable to entering a time machine and being whisked back to the summer of 1960. I was pulled into a world of innocence. A world where Davy Connors woke early each morning to find his clothes laid out on the bathroom floor, his breakfast on the table, and a pile of newspapers waiting to be delivered. Where Davy played Wiffle ball with the other neighborhood children on the streets during the day and hide and seek at night. Where a sense of belonging filled the air.

There’s Davy, the precocious boy who tugs at your heart and provides amusing insights into those around him; Mr. Melzer, the peacemaker with his undaunted faith and love for everyone; the lonely Mrs. Wrinklemeyer with her cats and ancient candy; and Davy’s mom, Ruth Conners, whose quiet faith propels her to create the Gospel Flight Day.

As well as racial prejudice, Locke touches on other attitudes prevalent of the era. The stigma attached to divorcees and the fear created by the Cold War are just two examples readers witness through the lives of the Conners family. For readers born after the 60s, Locke includes an informative section entitled The Way Things Were In 1960 which adds to the understanding of topics raised within the book.

The Summer The Wind Whispered My Name is the kind of book you want to read while lounging in the sun with a cold lemonade and a Good Humor bar. But beware—the book does contain a couple of gross out moments via loogie torture and booger promises.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Matt Bronleewe is a recognized producer, songwriter and author. The former member of the band Jars of Clay, has earned numerous awards producing and co-writing albums that have sold a combined total of over 20 million copies. His songs have recently been recorded by Disney pop sensations Aly & AJ, American Idol finalist Kimberley Locke, and more. Bronleewe has worked with Grammy Award-winning artists such as Michael W. Smith, International pop singer Natalie Imbruglia and Heroes star Hayden Panettiere.

Born in Dallas, Texas, Bronleewe was raised on a farm in Kansas, where he lived until he left for college in 1992. At Greenville College in Illinois, Bronleewe formed the band Jars of Clay with his dorm roommate and two neighbors, and the group soon found success. Though Bronleewe opted to leave Jars of Clay early on to pursue an academic career, he soon found himself in Nashville, co-writing, producing, and playing music professionally.

To add to his list of accomplishments, Bronleewe has expanded his love of story telling beyond music into authorship. He is currently penning a 5 book series for Thomas Nelson Fiction. His first book Illuminated began the adventurous series about rare manuscripts and the mysteries within.

Bronleewe currently resides in Brentwood, Tenn., with his wife and three children. He continues to write and produce music, and he also volunteers through his church to help disadvantaged youth in the community. Bronleewe enjoys reading, taste-testing good food and watching sports, as well as indulging his interests in art, architecture, design and science.

Robin Parrish had two great ambitions in his life: to have a family, and to be a published novelist. In March of 2005, he proposed to his future wife the same week he signed his first book contract.

More than ten years he spent writing for various websites, including About.com, CMCentral.com, and Infuze Magazine, which is a unique intersection between art and faith which he also conceived of and created.

One of his more "high concept" ideas for Infuze was to return to his love for storytelling and create a serialized tale that would play out every two weeks, telling a complete, compelling story over the course of nine months. That serialized story eventually came to the attention of several publishers, who saw it as a potential debut novel for Robin Parrish.

In 2005, Bethany House Publishers brought Robin full circle by contracting him for the rights to not only that first book, Relentless -- but two sequels including Fearless and Merciless.
