Forty—the milestone that leaves your either dreading the fact that middle age has finally arrived or embracing the new era in your life.

I found it somewhat appropriate that I read Travis Thrasher’s book 40 over the month that I entered this decade of my life. As I embraced the turn of age, I found myself somewhat glued to Thrasher’s character Tyler Harrison as he journeyed toward his big 4-0. I was also very thankful I wasn't facing Tyler’s sudden mortality.

With only nine months to go before music producer Tyler turned forty, he starts developing strange hallucinations. As he struggles to comprehend what is happening to him, he meets Matthew, his guardian angel. Matthew, unfortunately, is not the bearer of good news. Instead he tells Tyler that he has only two hundred and fifty-six days to live. He will see his next birthday, but not a day longer.

Matthew takes Tyler on a journey through his past, showing him events in his life where he could have died had Matthew not been there to prevent it. When Matthew refuses to give Tyler any straight answers, Tyler sends him away and continues his downward spiral into hopelessness and despair.

As his personal D-day approaches, Tyler meets DJ Ellis and Pastor Will, two polar opposites who both intrigue and unsettle him. Ellis takes Tyler on a fast and furious journey of immorality and temptations, while Pastor Will tries to help Tyler sort through his confusion and fears.

Thrasher did a fantastic job with characterizations  especially Tyler’s, who was very dark, gritty, and complex. However, I do have to issue a bad language warning for those who prefer not to read it in a book. 

Musical references played a big part in the story, with each chapter also named after a song title. While the references helped solidify Tyler’s character, I didn't always get them and found some confusing and unfamiliar, even though I was brought up in that era.

As with all good suspense novels, a twist is inevitable. 40 is no different and Thrasher managed to take me by surprise with its excellent execution and thought provoking implications.

Written in first person narrative, 40 is very dark and highly introspective. I have to admit, I struggled at times to finish the book and I still can’t decide if I loved it or hated it. One thing is for sure, 40 is not a book you will forget in a hurry. 

Relentless Pursuit by Kathy Herman

Instead of the idyllic tourist town Sax envisioned, Les Barbes soon becomes the center of national attention when a suspected bio-terrorist attack begins to claim lives. With most of the local eateries closing down due to the cyanide threat, Sax frequents Zoe B’s Cajun Eatery, run by Zoe Broussard and her husband, Pierce. Between the guesthouse and the eatery, Sax becomes acquainted with numerous residents whose lives are entwined by the tragedy engulfing the town.

Can Sax find his sister and the peace he desperately craves amidst a town reeling from loss and suspicion?

From page one, I was pulled into Sax’s desire to find his sister and make right his tormented past. With his parents gone and failed marriages behind him, Sax longs for a connection with the sister he had abandoned. Anyone who has lost or hurt a loved one will sympathize and relate with Sax as he searches for the forgiveness he desperately needs.   

Sax is not the only character readers will relate too. Relentless Pursuit has a large cast of characters, each one unique and struggling in their own way. I soon found myself grieving along with the townsfolk over those who had become victims to the cyanide attack. I did figure out who was behind the cyanide poisonings early on, but this didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the story.

Although Relentless Pursuit is the third in the Secrets of Roux River Bayou series, the first two titles being False Pretenses and Dangerous Mercy, I had no trouble following the many characters and their previous histories. Herman is a master at interweaving the current storyline with just enough backstory to keep readers informed without clogging the existing action. I will definitely be reading the two previous books in this series and reacquainting myself with the now familiar characters. Come with me. Pick up one of the series and immerse yourself in the rich Cajun flavors of south Louisiana.

The stories continue to fill his head like they did when he was in third grade. The only difference is that Travis now knows what to do with those stories. His goal continues to be to tell stories that move him as well as his readers. He wants to continue to experiment and take risks, but more than anything he wants to provide readers a satisfying experience.

The dream remains the same. To try and write something magnificent. To make up wild worlds full of wonderfully rich characters. To make sense of the world through the stories he tells. And to try and inspire hope with the words he writes.

Melanie Dobson is the award-winning author of The Black Cloister; Love Finds You in Liberty, Indiana; and Together for Good, and she has now authored nine contemporary and historical novels including Love Finds You in Nazareth, Pennsylvania which releases in November 2011.

Prior to launching Dobson Media Group in 1999, Melanie was the corporate publicity manager at Focus on the Family where she was responsible for the publicity of events, products, films, and TV specials. Melanie received her undergraduate degree in journalism from Liberty University and her master's degree in communication from Regent University. She has worked in the fields of publicity and journalism for fifteen years including two years as a publicist for The Family Channel.

Melanie and her husband, Jon, met in Colorado Springs in 1997 at Vanguard Church. Jon works in the field of computer animation. Since they've been married, the Dobsons have relocated numerous times including stints in Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Colorado, Berlin, and Southern California. These days they are enjoying their new home in the Pacific Northwest.

Jon and Melanie have adopted their two daughters —Karly (6) and Kinzel (5). When Melanie isn't writing or entertaining their girls, she enjoys exploring ghost towns and dusty back roads, traveling, hiking, line dancing, and reading inspirational fiction.

Barbara Covington couldn’t wait for her daughter Emily to finally graduate from rehab and life to get back to ‘normal.’ Deep down she knew things would never be exactly as they had been over a year ago, but she never expected her fifteen-year-old son Lance to end up in prison.

When Lance heard that his pregnant friend Jordan had left rehab, he drives to her house to find out why. Upon arriving, he finds that not only has Jordan just given birth at home, but she is about to reluctantly hand her baby over to a couple of shady looking strangers. Forced by Jordan’s mother and brother to leave, Lance heads home disheartened and worried about what will become of his friend and her baby. A cry of a newborn emitted from the backseat soon spins Lance’s life into the path of the law when he is later accused by Jordan of kidnapping her baby.

Desperate to get her son out of jail in time for Emily’s graduation, Barbara calls on Detective Kent Harlan, an officer she met a year previously when Emily went missing amid accusations of murder. Kent flies to Jefferson City to help the woman he has grown to love over the past year and soon finds himself caught up in a case involving drug abuse and child trafficking.

Vicious Cycle is the second Intervention novel by Terri Blackstock and is as well written and fast paced as the first.

Blackstock depicts a very real criminal underworld in both books which left me cringing each time Emily and Lance were thrust into it. Vicious Cycle realistically portrays the dangers of drug addiction and its long term effects. I was completely drawn into the lives of the Covington’s once again and found myself rooting for this family struggling to overcome the effects of Emily’s drug addiction.

You don’t need to read Intervention to follow Vicious Cycle as Blackstock has done a fabulous job of providing just enough information to make this a standalone story. But to get the most out of both stories and really immerse yourself in the Covington family’s trials, I strongly suggest you read both.

Dale Cramer was the second of four children born to a runaway Amishman turned soldier and a south Georgia sharecropper's daughter. His formative years were divided between far-flung military bases, but he inherited his mother's sense of place—

He took on small construction projects at night to help make ends meet— "and to preserve the remainder of my sanity," he says. While building an office in the basement of a communications consultant, a debate over labor/management relations turned into an article on mutualism which found its way into an international business magazine. It was Dale's first published article, and he liked the feel of it. He bought books, studied technique, and began participating in an online writers' forum, writing during the boys' naps and after they went to bed at night. Before long he was publishing short stories in literary magazines and thinking about writing a book.

Three storylines vied for Dale's attention when he finally decided to write a novel. His first two choices were commercially viable secular stories, and a distant third appeared to be some kind of Christian saga about a broken-down biker. The process of determining which novel to write was settled by a remarkable encounter with his youngest son, a lost set of keys, and God. His sense of direction was suddenly clarified. In 1997, Dale began work on Sutter's Cross, which was eventually published in 2003.

His second novel, Bad Ground (July 2004), while it is not autobiographical, contains a great deal of material drawn from his own experience as a construction electrician.

He and his wife and two sons make their home in northern Georgia.

An Amish settlement in Ohio has run afoul of a law requiring their children to attend public school. Caleb Bender and his neighbors are arrested for neglect, with the state ordering the children be placed in an institution. Among them are Caleb's teenage daughter, Rachel, and the boy she has her eye on, Jake Weaver. Romance blooms between the two when Rachel helps Jake escape the childrens home.

Searching for a place to relocate his family where no such laws apply, Caleb learns there's inexpensive land for sale in Mexico, a place called Paradise Valley. Despite rumors of instability in the wake of the Mexican revolution, the Amish community decides this is their answer. And since it was Caleb's idea, he and his family will be the pioneers. They will send for the others once he's established a foothold and assessed the situation.

Caleb's daughters are thrown into turmoil. Rachel doesn't want to leave Jake. Her sister, Emma, who has been courting Levi Mullet, fears her dreams of marriage will be dashed. Miriam has never had a beau and is acutely aware there will be no prospects in Mexico.

Once there, they meet Domingo, a young man and guide who takes a liking to Miriam, something her father would never approve. While Paradise Valley is everything they'd hoped it would be, it isn't long before the bandits start giving them trouble, threatening to upset the fledgling Amish settlement, even putting their lives in danger. Thankfully no one has been harmed so far, anyway.
